LHP Griffin Canning Happy to Be Back and Prove He Can Still Succeed

The Angels could be getting a look at a future rotation piece as Griffin Canning is showing that he can be successful post-injury. Half of this season has been spent on the sidelines by Canning after suffering a back injury that required surgery. 

Now that he is back, he has been strong in his first two starts.

On Friday, Canning went six innings while only giving up two runs. That performance is coming off of his previous start where he went seven innings and gave up two runs. 

Just being back on the mound is all Canning cares about. He suffered his back injury at the beginning of the 2022 season. 

“I honestly didn’t really put any expectations on it,” Canning said of the season. “Just trying to go one day at a time but obviously it’s pretty cool to come back after missing year and a half and throw over 100 innings. Still got a couple more starts. Finish strong.”

This past week for Canning has been a bright spot for a team that has had a rough couple of weeks. 

Everyone on the team appreciates what Canning is doing after what he's been through, especially manager Phil Nevin. 

Nevin mentioned his confidence in the young pitcher. 

“He’s pitched his tail off,” Nevin said. “I really like all the pitches, the mixes he uses. He’s kept us in every game. I feel like every time he’s been out there, we’ve we’ve had a chance to win for him. I know he’s got seven of them, but he should have more.”

Canning will look to continue his strong start to his 2023 season and will look to finally pick up his first win of the year.
