Cubs Reinstate Michael Fulmer, Place Adbert Alzolay on IL
Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs are busy making roster moves on Monday, and it isn't the ones fans are waiting for. With the highly-anticipated official announcement for Pete Crow-Armstrong's promotion on the horizon, the Cubs made a few moves in the bullpen. According to Marquee Sports Network's Taylor McGregor, RHP Michael Fulmer has been activated from the 15-day IL. To make space for him on the roster, RHP Adbert Alzolay has been placed on the 15-day IL with a forearm strain.

Fulmer returns to the bullpen after a forearm strain of his own landed him on the IL. Fulmer, who has come in clutch multiple times for the Cubs, should help the bullpen immensely. Although Alzolay is now out, Fulmer's presence in big moments is unrivaled. His work in the bases-loaded jam against the White Sox will be a memorable moment from the 2023 campaign.

Fulmer's season has been solid despite his numbers. In the months of June and July, Fulmer was electric. However, Fulmer's August was not great, just like the beginning of the season. Having him back for tough situations should elevate the bullpen.

As for Alzolay, seeing him head to the IL is concerning. That said, perhaps the strain explains his recent struggles. The Cubs' bullpen has been used a lot and most of the relievers have set career highs in innings pitched. This move could be more about rest for Alzolay and less about an actual injury worthy of significant concern. Only time will tell but its an angle worth considering.

The Cubs and Rockies kick off a three-game set on Monday at Coors Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. CDT.
